The Rajasthan government has imposed 20% cess on the sale of all kinds of alcoholic drinks in the state with effect from 23rd June, 2018. As per the reports, this surcharge levied on liquor will be utilized for the bovine protection.
According to the notification issued by the Rajasthan Finance Department, the surcharge at the rate of 20% shall be levied and collected on the sale of foreign liquor, Indian made foreign liquor, country liquor, and beer sold by the dealers.
The notification doesn’t include any information as to how the surcharge will be utilized but as per the officials of the excise department, the 20% cess will help in generating additional revenue which will be used for the protection and conservation of cows in the state.

Apparently, the ruling BJP in Rajasthan has been consistently focusing on protecting and safeguarding cows and is leaving no stone unturned in making extra efforts in the best interest of the bovines in the state.
Last year, the government had imposed 10% surcharge on non-judicial instruments which made the rent agreements, mortgage papers and lease agreements a little costlier. Recently, this 10% surcharge on stamp duty was increased to 20%.
Reportedly, the state government has been able to generate more than 200 Crores of revenue from the cow surcharge levied on stamp duty. Now by levying 20% cess on the sale of liquor the government aims to utilize the amount for the welfare of the cows. Besides, it also plans to distribute the grant to cow shelters ahead of the Assembly elections.
