Rajasthan Road Transport Department has started following an initiative of union transport ministry by launching new driving license bearing an ‘organ donor’ logo. The first license in the state with the logo had issued to Jaipur resident Bhawna Jagwani, NGO worker and an advocate for organ donation. Union transport ministry proposed this initiative in a bid to promote cadaveric organ donation.
RTO recently incorporated a new category with online form filing- asking the applicant to fill the category if they are willing to donate organs. Application for DL renewal also has the category of an organ donor. When the applicant checks the category then the department will mention an organ donor logo on the chipped driving license.
According to surveys, Rajasthan witnesses about 5% of the total road accidents that happen in the country. In a majority of road accidents, the injured are reported brain dead. If these potential donors pledge for cadaveric organ donation, it can save lives of patients requiring transplant but is facing a shortage of needed organ. This initiative by the government is going to benefit hundreds of needy patients suffering from organ failure.
