Voter registration is the right of all eligible citizens of India, willing to participate in the affairs of the government. Fair voting is the fundamental right of every citizen. It creates a free, fair and credible environment for the election system and ensures good governance. It is the right of every citizen to be aware and educated about the process of electoral registration.
Considering the problems and constraints prevalent in the current scenario, the election commission is all set to launch a long comprehensive voter registration campaign in Rajasthan from 1 July, 2017. The government will try to enroll the left out voters in the voters list.
The campaign has been divided into two phases, as informed by the chief electoral officer Ashwini Bhagat. The chief electoral office is all set to launch the month-long campaign to enroll more than 20 lakh voters with a special focus on differently-abled and women voters between the age groups of 18-21 years.
STEPS TAKEN BY THE GOVERNMENT IN THIS DIRECTION…
- A district-level toll free helpline to inform the voters,
- A state-level central helpline number 1950 has been set up so that complaints from the districts would be addressed.
- The electoral officials will pay a visit to old-age homes, private organizations and public offices to enroll the elderly and specially-abled folks.
- Focus will be given on the laborers working in the unorganized sectors like brick kilns etc.
- The help of other political parties have also been sought to make this campaign a success.
- A SYSTEMATIC VOTERS EDUCATION PROGRAMME (SVEP) has been launched in the state to generate awareness among the voters. It includes street plays, candle light processions, cultural programme, etc.
However, the efforts made by the election commission are not enough to bring all the eligible voters into mainstreams. All the civil societies, government organizations and stakeholders must do their bit to make this initiative a huge success in Rajasthan.
