Gurjjar community organized their meeting at Bayana which was headed by Kirori Singh Bainsla. In this meeting, all gurjjar leaders and members have been asked to assemble and sit-in at Pilu ka pura from May 15, demanding reservation.
What are the demands?
Under Most Backward Classes (MBC), Gurjjar community is getting one per cent reservation. They are demanding for bifurcation of OBC quota to provide five per cent reservation to Gujjars and other communities.
Gurjjar agitation and Reservation
The demand for reservation in Rajasthan by this community is almost a decade long. After so many years, a bill was passed in October 2017 to raise OBC reservation from 21 to 26 per cent to provide five per cent quota to Gujjar and other castes by Rajasthan Assembly.
This increased reservation led to overall reservation of Rajasthan to 54 per cent. The percentage of reservation cannot be exceeded more than 50% in a state as per SC. Hence, Rajasthan High Court stayed the bill in order. Later, the Supreme Court also directed the state government not to exceed the 50 per cent reservation limit.
