Recently, there was a report that Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve will have three tigers roaming in the national forest and the work is expected to complete soon. However, as per a recent report, the state forest department has deferred the plan, at least till February. The reason for the delay is the ban on river sand mining in the state.
As river sand is used in the construction work, the ban has created difficulty in completing the task of fencing around the reserve. The fence is being constructed to prevent human and cattle intrusion in the reserve and until it’s completed, the authorities won’t be able to bring the tigers inside the reserve. Also, it’s not clear as to how long the ban will continue and hence no specific deadline has been decided for the project.
Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve
The Mukundra Tiger Reserve project involves the construction of a 36km long wall in Dara, Kanwas, GHTI Mata, Amjhar, Simliya, and other areas. However, till now, only 2kms of the wall has been constructed. Interestingly, Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve was declared as the state’s third tiger reserve since 2013 but there was no tiger at the sight.
In September 2017, the National Tiger Conservation Authority approved the relocation of three tigers from Ranthambore to Mukundra. The project was scheduled to be finished off by 2017 but apparently, it’s still not known for how long it will remain delayed.
