Ganga Kumari is the first transgender to be appointed to join the Rajasthan Police force as a constable. After battling for two years in the Rajasthan High Court, Ganga finally conquered her way out to achieve what she deserves. The 24-year old was denied induction into the police force by the department back in 2015.
After a 2-year long struggle justice was finally served when the case was termed as “gender bias” by Justice Dinesh Mehta who asked the force to appoint her within 6 weeks from the date of order. She is also eligible for the notional benefits that were to be granted to her from 2015.
Ganga Kumari is a resident of Raniwara of Jalore district who qualified the police recruitment examination for constables in the year 2013. However, the medical examination brought out the fact that she was a transgender led the recruiters to put the decision on hold.

In April 2015, Supreme Court had acknowledged transgenders as ‘third gender’. The department was in confusion and hence despite being eligible for the post, Ganga’s appointment was denied.
Reportedly, Kumari is the first transgender who appeared for the police recruitment exams and was successful. After the department’s denial, she approached High Court and demanded justice.
According to Ganga’s counsel, Rituraj Singh, the Jalore Police had transferred the case to Jodhpur range IGP who then sent it t police headquarters. The files kept transferring until they reached the home department and no action was taken since then.
Now that the case has been resolved and the verdict is out, Ganga Kumari has become the first transgender in Rajasthan and third in India to be appointed to a government position. More power to you Ganga!
