Rajasthan, the largest state of the country is trying every bit to support the women of the state. Now the state’s department of women and child In support of UNICEF and UNFPA has launched a joint campaign ‘Child marriages free Rajasthan’ on Monday. The technical and financial support to the state government will be provided by the acting high commissioner for Canada to India and International development agencies, to make Rajasthan a child marriage free state.
Almost 32% of total marriages happen in the state are child marriages. It is the highest in the country. We need to completely eliminate child marriages from the state. Community needs to be involved in it,” Kuldeep Ranka, secretary, department of women and child (DWC) said. “For the next three months, we will conduct activities under information education and communication (IEC) to make people aware against child marriages,” Richa Khoda, commissioner, directorate of women empowerment.
“There is a law in effect setting minimum age of marriage of girls at 18. But, at the same time, it is important to create awareness, which is why, government launched schemes such as Beti bachao-Beti Padao. There is a need to educate women so that they will become asset and they should not be treated as burden for the family,” Diego Palacios, UNFPA representative, India told
