Kota Collector Ravi Kumar Surpur’s Book Kolaveri Di is a little crazy, a little filmi and doesn’t include bigger insights or advice. It’s meant to be fun…

Kota, which is famous for offering world class engineering tuitions has a long history of suicidal deaths. Every year, hundreds of students having common ambition– to get enrolled in a reputed technical institute like IIT, flock in from all over India. In this duration, they’re subjected to peer pressure, burdened with their parents’ aspirations and turn to alcoholism or drug abuse. Unfortunately, 15 students in Kota committed suicide this year due to similar reasons. The increasing death rate in the city is a major concern for Rajasthan government. While the authorities have been putting in relentless efforts to resolve this issue, collector Ravi Kumar Surpur found a panacea for this problem.

Surpur’s Book Kolaveri Di is an Entertaining Amalgam of Bollywood, Memes and Friendly Advice…

Back in 2012, ‘Why this Kolaveri, Kolaveri Di’ was an epic song voiced and composed by veteran Tamil actor Dhanush. Collector Ravi Kumar used this unconventional line as title for his 20-page motivational booklet. He believes this will help students overcome academic stress.

With his creative book Kolaveri Di, Supur wants to reach out to students that are suffering from low self-esteem and poor performance. Kolaveri Di is a delightful read that beautifully connects with students.

Referring to readers as ‘friends’, the author uses a casual, informal tone to capture their interest. The book applies catchy Bollywood one-liners like “Ek baar jo maine commitment kar di fir main apne baap ki bhi nahi sunta” to different situations in student life. Supur uses graphics to help students combat peer pressure.

The book hands out solutions to deal with academic challenges, homesickness and loneliness. It assures youngsters that they’re just ‘one call away’ from their home. Moreover, it touches important issues like having proper sleep, bracing oneself up after failures, hormonal problems and gender distractions.

Quoting historical figure ‘Chanakya’ in his book, “Koi Jab Tak Tumhe Hara Nahi Sakta, Jab Tak Tum Khud Se Na Haar Maan Lo”, Surpur motivates students to overcome the fear of examinations and results. In the concluding part, he advised students to seek help from teachers, friends and parents.

Wrapping it up, Surpur said “We all expect our favourites to win but even if they don’t, we still love them”. This applies to all students. Their families, friends and teachers love them despite failures.

Surpur’s Book Kolaveri Di is a different, funny and lovable approach towards dealing with student life problems. It makes you feel lighter and relaxed. Students are going to love it for sure. With this, we just hope that author’s ‘informal method’ can effectively reduce number of suicidal deaths in future.
