WTP Workers Dropped Down from the 60-feet-high Mall Building, During Maintenance Tasks…
Tragedy struck at Rajasthan’s biggest mall located in Jaipur—World Trade Park (or WTP mall) today. In course of regular maintenance, 6 workers that were perched on elevated stairs outside the building, at a height of 60-feet above the ground when this tragic incident took place. The workers were repairing a glass pane located on the exterior. The sad thing is that neither mall management nor the supervising agencies have made proper safety precautions for the labors.
The labors were sent to work in danger situations, without safety helmets and suits. Overloading caused the elevated stair to bend at haphazard angles. Consequently the elevated stair collapsed, which is why the labors dropped down in the courtyard situated just outside the mall. Sudden fall of the labors struck chaos amidst public in the mall.
Jawahar Nagar circle police was informed that shortly arrived at the venue. Upon further investigation it was found that WTP management created a single long elevated stair using 3 to 4 medium-level extendable stairs. Six glass cleaning workers were perched on the stairs that fell down due to overweight.
The victims were immediately rushed to the nearby Jaipuria hospital. Unfortunately, 2 out of 6 victims succumbed to their death due to grave injuries whereas 4 of them are battling for life now. For now, the police have arrested the contractors and WTP mall managers, who were responsible for mall maintenance.
The police will interrogate WTP management on grounds of safety mismanagement and the government will offer compensation to the victims’ families. Things will eventually sort out in a while but the major question is—how long will the society turn a blind eye towards incidents like. Will owners of big, lavish properties take lessons from this incident and arrange property safety precautions at work to safeguard their staff? The government needs to introduce strict regulations to prevent tragic workplace accidents like these in future.
