Known for keeping her promises, Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje finally fulfils the promise she had made to Rajasthan Gurjars. The Raje-led Rajasthan government moved the SLP (Special Leave Petition) in the apex court to reinforce the Gurjar reservation case that took a drastic turn with interference from self-proclaimed leaders like Himmat Singh and Kirodi Singh Bainsla.
The government formally informed the Gujjar leaders about the latest developments, this Sunday. The case is scheduled for hearing on 23rd and 28th January. It was a wise decision made by Raje government to restore peace and social harmony in Rajasthan. After the Supreme Court gives its decision, the government will chalk out the future plans accordingly. Having received unconditional support from Raje government, the Gujjar leaders (probably pressurised by their fellow community members) have agreed to fix up a meeting with Rajasthan government on February 15.
The leaders will probably discuss future strategies with the ministerial committee, in the aftermath of the SC’s decision. Despite the government assuring Rajasthan Gurjars of its support, the so-called leaders were putting off reconciliatory meetings with the high command for selfish reasons.
For those who don’t know, the Gurjar reservation has always been a sensitive issue for Rajasthan. Following the mass Gurjar riots that took place in 2008, Rajasthan government gave into social pressure to grant them 5% quota in the SBC (Special Backward Category). However, in 2016, the Rajasthan HC struck it down, claiming that this additional 5% quota is violating constitutional cap of 50% that was set by the Supreme Court.
This has caused slight unrest among the Gujjar communities as they demanded the court to do the same in Meena and Jat reservation case. Feeling offended by the court conducting re-survey for 5 castes included in the SBC, Himmat Singh objected to this move. Singh, who’s a spokesman for Rajasthan Gujjar Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti demanded that the court should get the survey done for all 81 castes.
Nevertheless, with the HC refusing a stay on this order, the so-called leaders tried to create social unrest in the state. With Rajasthan government interfering in this matter, the problem was crushed before it could’ve taken a serious form. Moreover, with the support of other Gurjar members of the community, Rajasthan government successfully devised a legal strategy for the same.
Now, everyone’s waiting for the SC’s decision. Hopefully, this will resolve all controversies related to Gurjar reservation case, once and for all.
