The Rajasthan government has given its nod to the proposal made by Union Home Ministry for setting up investigative units to investigate crimes against women. These units will be established in 7 districts of the state namely Udaipur, Pratapgarh, Ajmer, Alwar, Jhalawar, Sriganganagar, and Jodhpur (East).

Additional Director General of Police (Civil Rights) Mohan Lal Lather said that all the women police stations will keep functioning as IUCAW will be assisting other units in the probe. The government has also allocated staff for the special investigative units, each of them having one Deputy Superintendent of Police, two inspectors, one sub-inspector, and a constable-cum-driver.

As per the data revealed by Rajasthan Police, 25,560 cases of women atrocities and 3,305 cases of rape were registered last year. Talking about the districts where the special unit will be set up, the number of women atrocities cases were 1023 in Sriganganagar, 1686 in Alwar, 1121 in Udaipur, 798 in Jhalawar, 552 in Pratapgarh, 1239 in Ajmer, and 380 in Jodhpur (East). As far as the rape cases are concerned, the figures were 130 in Sriganganagar, 285 in Alwar, 154 in Udaipur, 111 in Ajmer, 37 in Jodhpur (East) and 97 each in Pratapgarh and Jhalawar.

The main objective of establishing these units is to augment investigative machinery against heinous crimes like rapes, dowry death, and human trafficking. It would also encourage women to lodge complaints and would improve gender ratio in police forces which in turn would help in effective implementation of laws for women.

These investigating units will also perform additional functions like proactive policing, tackling organized crimes, monitoring the implementation of legislative provisions, and promoting social participation in keeping a check on crimes against women. Once established, the dedicated units will ensure a higher rate of conviction that would hopefully bring a positive change in society, in the best interest of women welfare.
