Recently, a girl from Bikaner made to headlines. She has done something remarkable for herself. Due to her efforts, she not only saved herself but also opened the pathway for many girls like her to stand for themselves and ask for their rights. Monica is a 13 year old girl who fought against child marriage. This act of hers also made her parents realized their mistakes. Her parents made a promise not to get her married before legal age of 18 years.
She was forced for childhood marriage. But on the day of marriage, she had taken help of Child Welfare Centre and made a complaint about her parents. Due to the efforts of Preeti Yadav, a surveillance officer of child marriage and her team, Monica’s wedding had been stopped at the right time.
India has made remarkable progress after independence by demolishing several evil practices and traditions to great extent but practice of child marriage still exists. This practice not only effect girls but also boys. But girls suffer more due to this. Basically, child marriage is a marriage of girl below age 18 or the boy who is below age 21.
Thanks to girls like Monica who has supported Rajasthan Government in fighting child marriage. It is important for people to be conscious of side-effects of child marriage and take action against it.
