Rajasthan dairy farmers will now earn more revenue as they got one more way for earning money. Not only cow milk but also cow urine can be sold. In fact, this new stream is more lucrative as urine of high breed cows is being sold at Rs 30/litre in the wholesale market while cow milk fetches farmers between Rs 22 and Rs 25 for litre. This urine is further sold by traders at Rs 30 to Rs 50 per litre in retail markets. In fact, this new business has increased the farmer’s earnings by 30 percent.

Undoubtedly, this business generates more revenues but the profits are coming at a cost. In order to save urine from being spoiled, farmers have to stay awake at nights.

Benefits of Cow Urine
It can be used in multiple ways. In organic farming, it can as an alternative to pesticides. People use it for medicinal purposes like diabetes, kidney as well as eye aliments and heart diseases. For religious rituals, like ‘yagna’ and ‘anchgavyam’ cow urine is known.

Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology in Udaipur buys 300-500 litres of cow urine every month for the organic farming. Hence, it is one of the largest buyers of cow urine. University spends approx. Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 per month on this.

Rajasthan state also owns a cow-urine refinery. The refinery was set up at Pathmera Gaushala at Jalore in May 2015. It was inaugurated by then state medical and health minister Rajendra Rathore. This cow-urine extract is being used for the formulation of various products.
