Ashok Lahoti, the new mayor of the city has rolled out an astonishing warning for the meat sellers after his ambitious “swachhta abhiyan” in the city. He asked the sellers to not cut or slaughter the poultry and animals in front of their shops.

He recently had meeting with the delegations of meat sellers at the headquarters of Jaipur Municipal Corporation and thus this decision was taken.

In the next 15 days, he will renew the licenses of these meat shops. The JMC records say that, more than 1,250 meat shops are in queue from long for their license renewal.

The president of New Jaipur Meat Association, Abdul Raquf Khurshi said that, “Licences of all meat shops will be renewed after a survey. The mayor has said that the drive against meat shops would begin only after renewal”.

The mayor has given strict warnings that, if they continue to shop meat in front of their shops, their licenses will be cancelled with immediate effects. This has been done to maintain proper cleanliness and hygiene around their premises. Also, they will not be allowed to litter around the surrounding areas and throw waste.

A JMC official also said, “The JMC will provide a vehicle to meat sellers to dump waste and leftovers. They have also been advised to throw waste only in bins to avoid action”.

During the meeting of 5th general body, the JMC gave approval to the license fee starting from Rs. 10 to Rs. 1,000. They have talks of forwarding the proposal to the local bodies directorates to get the final approval.

Khurshi said that, “There is only one slaughterhouse in the city near Ramgarh, which is nearly 15km away. It is not fully equipped and the JMC has not even provided proper water facility at the abattoir. Our animals have died due to snake bites. The mayor has promised to improve the condition. Tenders for the same will be issued in a week’s time”.
