Jaipur Walled City

Minister of State for Culture Mahesh Sharma said in the Rajya Sabha that the Jaipur Walled City in Rajasthan is going to be the next proposed site for UNESCO World Heritage recognition. According to the 2017 UNESCO operational guidelines that determine the implementation of the world heritage convention, one state can nominate only one site each year.

Mr. Mahesh Sharma said that this kind of recognition impacts the local economy by giving a boost to domestic and international tourism that further leads to employment generation, the creation of world-class infrastructure, and an augmented sale of local handicrafts, handlooms, and heritage memorabilia.

Overall, there are 37 Heritage Sites in India whereby most of them are under the protection of the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). These Include Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, Fatehpur Sikri, Red Fort, etc. Besides, the newly added sites in the list are Victorian and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai. It’s a collection of 19th Century Victorian Neo-Gothic public buildings and Art Deco buildings dating to the 20th Century.

Talking about Rajasthan, the state has several places recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include Keoladeo National Park, Jantar Mantar, Chittorgarh Fort, Kumbalgarh, Ranthambore, Amer Fort, Jaisalmer Fort, Gagron Fort, and Desert National Park.

As far as the Jaipur Walled City is concerned, it’s an ancient wall encircling the old city of Jaipur that was built in 1727 when the city was founded by Maharaja Jai Singh II. Today the walled city has been transformed into a tourist attraction with smart amenities yet at the same time, the ancient infrastructure and design have been preserved well by the authorities.
