Jaipur Goes Clean: Door-to-Door Garbage Collection in 9 More Wards

The drive to make ‘pink city’ a ‘clean city’ is spreading like a forest fire in Rajasthan. This world environment’s day, Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje introduced the concept of ‘green and blue’ dustbins to encourage safe garbage disposal. Keeping up with the CM’s slogan “Clean Jaipur, Healthy Jaipur, Clean Rajasthan, Healthy Rajasthan”, the JMC (Jaipur Municipal Corporation) is set to introduce door-to-door garbage collection facility in nine more wards this month. The facility will kick start from June 17.

Walled City to Benefit from Garbage Collection Facility Soon…

Walled city—the ‘local bazaar’ area is an important part of Jaipur, which represents the cultural diversity of Rajasthan. The walled city welcomes thousands of shoppers from around the world, seeking colorful collectibles in Jaipur. Last week, while reviewing the sanitation condition, Mayor Ashok Lahoti expressed concern over thoughtless garbage dumping practices in the walled city. To put an end to it, Lahoti directed the BVG Company to prepare a road map for door-to-door garbage collection facility.

Accordingly, Jaipur Municipal Corporation identified six out of nine wards for safe garbage disposal in the walled city. Garbage collection vans will visit ward numbers 66, 73, 74, 75, 76 and 77 to collect waste from every household on a daily basis. In accordance with the mayor’s instructions, the BVG will monitor the collection process here.

The department is likely to extend its services in remaining wards (71, 72 and 78), starting from June 27. To avoid mismanagement and public protests, the JMC will execute its plan in a phased manner this time. Rather than launching the scheme in all 91 wards, they’ll take baby steps, covering major areas first.

The idea of garbage collection was first launched during former mayor Jyoti Khandelwal’s tenure. The scheme was launched in the outer wards outside the Walled city. However, considering the dense footfall within the city walls, the JMC officials are likely to target the market region this month.

Total fee levied on domestic and commercial organizations for waste collection is as following—

  1. Plot size < 50 square meters: Rs 20.
  2. Plot Size >50 square meters to 300 square meters: Rs 80.
  3. Plot Size > 300 square meters: Rs 150.
  4. Guest houses & Hotels: Rs 500 to Rs 750.
  5. Commercial shops, sweet shops, restaurants, cafes etc: Rs 2,509.

The prices charged by the company are nominal, considering that you don’t have to dump garbage outside your house everyday.
